Religion poisons everything, and evangelical religions and the catholic church are particularly poisonous and dangerous. Religions are overly preoccupied with sex. It is one of the main drivers for them. And they use guilt to hold sway over sex and behavior. The church is very adept at using guilt over and over to control people. I'm amazed more people don't figure this out.

I've always struggled with calling myself a "Humanist," too. We are not the center of the universe. We are a by-product of it, just like every other creature on this planet and others. I think some atheists get so wrapped up in their moral superiority that they forget other creatures are capable of suffering, joy, sadness, kindness, empathy, and thought. I was raised Catholic and called bullsh!t early on. I say this because I remember something my mom used to say about other creatures, "They're just dumb animals." I still struggle with that phrase. Have you ever looked into their eyes? They are not dumb in any means. They just don't speak our language. However, if we observe them, we can learn theirs.

The end of Christianity would ne a gift from god. What god? Pick one. Or invent one yourself like so many other have.

I can’t do veganism for a few reasons, one of which is the fact meat is one of the few things that doesn’t upset my digestive system too much nowadays, though I also have a different moral perspective. We humans are not exceptional. We are animals and are part of nature, and Mother Earth’s children. Nature is not, however, all sunshine and rainbows. Animals eat plants, and those animals are then eaten in turn, until the apex predators die and the decomposers return their nutrients to the soil, where the plants use them in order to grow. So, we have a right to eat meat, but other creatures have the right to eat us, in turn, though we also have the right to defend ourselves to survive. Similarly, we have the right to use medicine to attempt to survive diseases. Our main moral obligation is to not destroy ecosystems, not to not eat meat. After all, most herbivores will not hesitate to eat meat if they happen upon a dead baby bird or something. It’s just a relatively minimal part of their diet and they don’t seek it out. As you can tell, my perspective is very different, and arguably operates on a bigger scale, for it is less concerned about individuals, and more about species and ecosystems. I’m somewhere between utilitarianism and land ethics, whereas I know that many vegans who are vegans for moral reasons lean more towards Kantian ethics. I still hate factory farming, though.

There’s a serious problem here that no one ever seems to address: if non-human animals deserve equal moral consideration because of their capacity to suffer, then a great many of them (all predators, all parasites, slaving and farming ants, all who violently compete for territory or mating opportunities at the expense of others, etc) are guilty of victimizing and exploiting others for their own benefit, and there is an argument that we must actively oppose them, even stop them, perhaps even exterminate them. I think the inherent contradiction of having a moral duty to protect rabbits from coyotes is obviously a problem (what of the coyotes, then?), and it reveals the flaw in all this moralizing about animal rights and animal liberation. Until someone produces a convincing argument that explains why it’s so different for them, why it’s ok to be a lion who lives exclusively by painfully killing and eating other large mammals, then it’s pretty hard to say that it’s not ok to be a human who kills and eats large mammals. This is just another kind of human exceptionalism, right? We are somehow different; somehow very special; something unique about us, and only us, says that we must not kill to eat. Until this is resolved, the moral arguments for veganism fall completely flat. And that’s aside from the fact that ALL agriculture causes harm to animals, even if the consumable products of it are only plants. In my opinion, it’s pretty clear that further reflection is needed, and what’s actually called for is not the conclusion that humans are extra special and have an extra special moral requirement to not harm other animals, but rather the far more difficult project of reassessing our moral ideas so that they can account for the reality at hand. Animal life is what it is. We eat other living things to survive. There’s no getting away from it. There’s no hiding from it. It must be accepted and justified. Otherwise the only right conclusion is that we should end all life aside from plant life so that no more harm will be done (this obviously cannot be correct, but it IS the reductio ad absurdum of what you’ve said here, and it must be addressed). There's something to this, they've just misunderstood what they are looking at. Religion for Breakfast has a great video about how "stricter" religions that have a bigger impact on the follower's lives are much more enduring than religions that are lax and don't place demands on the followers. Being difficult to follow is actually a "survival trait" for a religion and we would naturally expect all enduring religions to "go against human desires."
